“Sneakers” were sneaked on us in 1887, when the Boston Journal made reference to "sneakers" as "the name boys give to tennis shoes."
The name literally derives from how quiet the rubber soles were on the ground, in contrast to noisy standard hard-leather soled dress shoes. Someone wearing sneakers could "sneak up" on you.
The original purpose of the shoes dictated an athletic end use in sports, and many variations of sneakers are now well known categories. A few examples include the following: tennis shoes, running shoes, cross-trainers, soccer shoes and many more.
“Sneakers” is the more common term used in the northeastern United States and southern Florida. Our U.K. cousins call them “trainers,” and in some urban parts of the U.S., the slang for sneakers is “kicks,” and finally in South African English, you need to call them “tackies.”
Sneakers have become a staple part of hip hop and rock ‘n’ roll culture since the 1970s.
Sneaker Collectors, called “Sneakerheads,” can pay $1000 and more for a pair of designer or famous style sneakers endorsed by rapper musicians.
Sneakers are by far the most comfortable genre of footwear.
By default of construction, which features rubber or EVA soles, sneakers are made for comfort. Soft, flexible, cushy soles are the perfect shock-absorbent soles anyone can appreciate.
Sneakers are now part of our daily routine. Commuters wear sneakers on the train during a commute and change into less comfortable, but more office-approved footwear at work.
Music industry, art, film and many other creative professions have allowed sneakers as an acceptable and even predictable type of everyday footwear.
